Most fully insured Aetna commercial plans in New Jersey are subject to the state's autism insurance mandate, which requires coverage for children under 21 with an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. Aetna treats ABA as a medically necessary service and uses a two-stage authorization process: one for the initial BCBA assessment and a separate authorization for ongoing treatment sessions. We handle both submissions.
Aetna Better Health of NJ is a separate Medicaid managed care plan under NJ FamilyCare. Children enrolled through that plan are covered under EPSDT, typically with no copay.

Two-stage authorization process. Aetna authorizes the assessment phase (CPT 97151) separately from ongoing treatment (CPT 97153 through 97158). We submit both and track them through the review process so one doesn't hold up the other.
Hours are set by clinical need, not a fixed weekly limit. Aetna bases authorized hours on your BCBA's documented recommendation, not an arbitrary cap.
Six-month authorization periods. Aetna issues authorizations for six months at a time. Reauthorization requires updated progress data, which we prepare and submit.
Plan to wait 14 to 30 business days for approval. We begin the submission immediately after your consultation so nothing is delayed on our end.
