Does Horizon BlueCross BlueShield cover ABA therapy

Yes, across most of their plans

Horizon BlueCross BlueShield NJ covers ABA therapy for children with a formal autism spectrum disorder diagnosis under New Jersey's autism insurance mandate. Coverage applies across many Horizon behavioral health plans, including Horizon NJ Direct and managed care network options. Horizon NJ Health, their Medicaid managed care plan, covers ABA for eligible children under 21 through NJ FamilyCare under the EPSDT benefit.

How Horizon ABA authorization works

The specifics that matter

Horizon uses a dedicated ABA Authorization Request Form. This is not a generic prior authorization. Horizon has a specific form for ABA services, and we complete it alongside all required supporting documentation.

Hours are based on medical necessity, not a fixed weekly limit. Your BCBA's clinical recommendation drives the authorized hours.

Both commercial and Medicaid plans are covered. We identify which applies to you and route the authorization accordingly.

Reauthorization is required periodically. We manage the timeline and submit updated documentation so your child's coverage stays active without interruption.

What Horizon ABA coverage pays for

What your plan covers for your child

Communication

Your child finds words, learns to ask for what they need, and gets to be understood.

Independence

They do more on their own, one skill at a time, with less help getting through the day.

Social connection

They learn to be near other kids, and gradually with them.

Self-regulation

They build better tools for hard moments, so fewer things derail the whole day.

Daily routines

Mornings, mealtimes, and transitions start working the way they're supposed to.

Family life

There's more of it, and less of the day spent in crisis mode.

Services covered by Horizon at Centerbrite include Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention for children up to age 4, Comprehensive and Focused ABA for children ages 4 to 16, and Parent Coaching in-home and virtual.

How your Horizon coverage plays out at Centerbrite

You stay informed, not on the outside looking in.

We bring parents into the session rather than the waiting room. You see the work, understand the plan, and know how to carry it forward at home.

Small caseloads mean your BCBA knows your child week to week.

We keep caseloads manageable so your BCBA can adjust before your next reauthorization, not just when it comes up on the calendar.

Therapy happens where your child lives.

In-home sessions during real family moments: breakfast, getting ready, bedtime. Parent coaching for the hours we're not there.

You always know where things stand.

Regular check-ins, written progress notes, and direct access to your BCBA.
